Frankie Ballard: a day with country's lovable renegade
Frankie Ballard gingerly shrugged out of his custom-made green Army jacket and handed it to the young man standing in front of him. "Try it on," he told him. "You like it."
Anthony Carbajal, who was responsible for sparking last summer's ALS ice bucket craze, hesitated. The rising country star assured him it was OK and watched Carbajal's face light up while sliding his arms into the black leather sleeves.
When Carbajal started to remove the coat, Ballard told him to just keep it.
The ALS.net exhibitor room was one of the first stops the "Sunshine & Whiskey" singer made during Country Radio Seminar the last week in February at the Nashville Convention Center. CRS is the largest educational country radio event in the world, attracting about 2,500 radio executives, artists, panelists and sponsors over three days. At last year's event, Ballard had yet to chart his first No. 1 song — now he has two. The singer has sold more than 1.5 million tracks, is the opening act on Florida Georgia Line's arena tour and two nights before played to a sold-out room at Madison Square Garden.
Ballard's new popularity made him one of the event's more sought-after artists, which was reflected in his hectic schedule and his invitation to play the conference's prestigious New Faces Show. The Tennessean spent the day at CRS with Ballard, a singer whom Warner Music Nashville CEO and President John Esposito calls country music's "lovable badass."
